4 Things That Cause Plumbing Problems
Indoor plumbing is a relatively new luxury in the grand scheme of things. You have running water literally at your fingertips and our waste is removed without even thinking about it. That is until something goes wrong. So who are the culprits? Whitby residents mainly. So let’s examine a few easy ways to help keep our plumbing systems running smoothly.
This is quite easy. We all know better but we still do it. Little bits of plastic or pieces of whatever we find on the floor get thrown into the sink and eventually head down our drains. This may not seem like a big deal but over time they can accumulate and will allow other smaller pieces of debris to stick together and cause a blockage. Take the couple of seconds and put garbage in its proper place or get yourself a house monkey to do it for you.
This one can be hard. Cleaning hair out of shower drains is a common service call for Whitby plumbers. Especially for clients that have several people in the house with long hair. Some of the products we use in the bathroom can cause a build-up in the drain. The build-up will seem rock like, allowing hair to grab on to and before you know it there is so much hair that water ceases to drain. Putting a small screen over the drain, and then cleaning this screen regularly, will greatly reduce the number of times you need to call a plumber. TIP: Drain cleaning chemicals may work but most are not good for the environment.
Although grease appears to be a liquid, once it cools it can solidify. Grease becomes like glue and everything that would normally drain, will adhere itself to the grease and cause a build-up that will eventually cause a blockage. Let grease cool and solidify, then scrape it into your compost bin. TIP: You may think that running hot water for a while will flush it down better. In a word yes, but you’re just pushing the problem further down the line. So unless you plan on running hot (re: Expensive) water for a very long time this is not advisable.
Of all the issues that arise, food scraps is the one most likely to decompose the fastest. Small pieces of vegetables will break down and wash away quicker, however if they mix with grease and garbage and hair you’re bound to have blocked pipes in no time. Food left on plates in a dishwasher can lead to the drain hose clogging up at its termination point. On the rare occasion a sewer drain can back up and flood a basement. Having proper insurance can ease the situation. Whitby insurance brokers can advise you on various ways to protect your home which can sometimes lead to lower rates.
This may be a small list but these account for most of the drainage issues I can encounter. With a bit of care you can save yourself a lot of headache, and money, by investing some time into your plumbing system. Your car needs regular maintenance and so does our plumbing.
